Abstract
A római katonai történelemben fontos szerepet játszottak a hadi jelvények és a különböző alakú zászlók. Számos tanulmány jelent már meg a római zászlók (vexillumok) és az egyéb hadi jelvények (pl. aquila) használatáról és kultikus jelentőségéről.1 Tanulmányomban egy kevésbé ismert, de annál érdekesebb jelenséget kívánok bemutatni. A római hadtörténelmet kutató történészek által már többször tanulmányozott hadi jelvény, az igen rejtélyes sárkányos zászló (draco) fontosságát két szempontból is szeretném ismertetni. Egyrészt ennek az eszköznek a katonai használatát érintem. Másrészt a hatalmi funkcióját is hangsúlyozni kívánom, amely politikai értelemben is fontos szerepet játszott a késő császárság korában. The military insignia (aquila, imago) and the standards of various shapes and uses (vexilla, dracones) played a very important role in Roman military history. In this essay I wish to delineate a lesser-known but more interesting phenomenon with a novel problem raising approach. I would like to present the role and the importance of military insignia from two viewpoints. I focus on the very mysterious dragon standard (draco) of the 2-6th centuries AD, which was already studied repeatedly by the military historians of the Roman era. On the one hand, I expound on the military role, the usage and the nature of this instrument, based primarily on the works of the second-century auctor Flavius Arrhianos, and on the works of the late Roman military specialist Vegetius. On the other hand, I want to emphasize the power of the dragon standard which played an important role in not only military but political sense in the era of emperors (Constantius II and Iulian the Apostate) in the 4th century AD.
