Abstract

The chronological order of the Avars from the appearance in Europe to the settling in the Carpathian Basin is debated. According to the traditional reconstruction the Avars showed up in 557/558 on the north from Caucasus then allied with the Byzantine Empire. Then they defeated the enemies of the Byzantine Empire one by one on the south Russian steppe. In 562 they have reached the vice-Danube and their kagan, Baján asked the area of Sycthia Minort for settlement. After the futile negotiations the Avars skirted the Carpathians from north, they engaged in battle with the Franks in 562/63, but they’ve lost it. Henceforth they unsuccessfully negotiated with the new Byzantine Emperor in 565. After the abortive expedition against Byzantium in 566, they have occupied the half of the Carpathian Basin in 567 allying with the Langobards. Walter Pohl has reconstructed the events in a different way. In his opinion the Avars showed in Europe in 558/559 and after an immediate allying they’ve beaten the enemies if the Byzantine’s going from east to the west. The last defeated folk was the Slavic Anta on the northeast from the Carpathians, then they have attacked the Franks futile going to the west in 562. Then they have appeared in 563 at the vice-Danube. In 565 negotiated with the Byzantines unsuccessfully, after that they’ve turned to the west and in 566 won over the Franks. So they had the chance to join forces with the Langobards, as a result in 567 they have invaded the eastern part of the Carpathian Basin. All in all, because of the deficiency of the sources the time between the appearance and conquest of the Avar sin Europe can be reconstructed in different ways.
