Abstract
After the Compromise of 1867, public education in Szentes started rapidly developing, several new schools were established of various types. The education of the youngest, however, was lacking since there was no kindergarten in town despite the demanding need for it, which had been obvious for decades. The first establishment of this kind was founded in 1876 as a result of the efforts of many years that the Jótékony Nõegylet (Charitable Women’s Association) demonstrated. The paper deals with the opening of the kindergarten and its circumstances, based especially on articles published in the local press.
