Absztrakt (kivonat)

In this paper I study and analyse the curricula of the four universities from the 1930s: the curricula of the first term of 1936/37 of the Hungarian Royal Franz Joseph University of Szeged, the first term of 1936/37 of the Hungarian Royal István Tisza University of Debrecen, the first term of 1931/32 of the Hungarian Royal Elisabeth University of Pécs and the first term of 1934/35 of the Royal Hungarian Péter Pázmány University of Budapest. Besides, my sources were but not limited to the literature on the history of education, the publications of the Association of the Archives of Hungarian Higher Education, literature on the history of the four universities and the referral on the yearly operation of the Hungarian Royal Franz Joseph University of Szeged between 1922 and 1937. I aimed at finding out, among others, how organized the universities were in the 1930s. What was the aim of the curriculum? Are there similarities and differences between the studied curricula? What was it like to be a professor? My primary research method was analysing sources that I supplemented with the introduction of the historical background. Moreover, owing to the data provided in the referrals of the university of Szeged I could form two tables that show the number of students studying at the faculty of arts, language and history at the university of Szeged during the terms of the examined 16 school years (1922–1937) compared to the total number of students of the university. The research revealed that the universities were well-organized and student-focused with a high rate of social sensitivity regarding institutions and employees alike. There were a few differences between the curricula. Outstanding scholars, prominent persons contributed to the high standard of education. The curricula were intended to help the students and give answers to all their questions. These booklets were at the students’ disposal at the beginning of the term and had minor modifications during the period. Although they are not available in their original form any more, I consider that the usage of curriculum should be reintroduced in higher education. I reckon that the usage of curricula as sources in the history of universities is an innovative method and was scarcely present in previous researches that is why their thorough study fills a void.
