Abstract
The rapid increase in the world population involves the increase of the basic food production as well. The food consumption is definitely dominated by the animal products, of which the poultry and pork consumption have got the prevailing role. Proportionally with the increase in population several millions of tons of meat consumption are calculated in the near future. In the article the role and the economic importance of the sector fulfilled in the food industry is being analyzed using the main index numbers of the international and national pork production, consumption and trade. During the evaluation, the analysis of the situation in Hungary is more emphasized, which is shown mostly in the radical decline of production, precipitous fall in livestock, and sale difficulties. Taking into account the change in the production environment, the role of the sector in the national economy and its achievements will be evaluated.
