Abstract
Tibor Löffler surveys the political dissension related to the last twenty years since the political change in Hungary in 1989 and 1990. The starting point of his study is that there are ambivalent judgements in Hungarian political discourse related to the event. Opinions are far different. Nowadays both the essence of the political change and its historical fact are queried. Notions like „social change model," „method change," „wellfare regime change," „re-change of regime" as well as „change of social sutructure" are also mentioned. Opinions, which have appeared in public life and professional discourse, get a heavy emphasis in Löffler's study. The words of politicians, professors, thinkers and even average Internet users are considered. The author produces lots of citations to illustrate and contrast each aspect. He attempts to represent a wide range of opinion while avoiding bias. On the other hand, the selected viewpoints make the subject more interesting because they allow us to get close to the controversial issue. The author looks for the roots of myths about regime change. But he says that differing forms of historical narrations and identities make it more difficult, not to mention the political ruptures in Hungary. Even the analysis of the legitimacy of the post-communist social system on the part of Hungarian right-wing have created an abstract political situation and directly or indirectly have led to the appearance of anti-myths. These anti-myths get a special treatment thanks to realpolitik references in the text. As well, the analysis mentions the Hungarian left-wing's initial relation to the political change of 1989 and 1990. However, these issues play an important role in today's national political discourse. The study also provides insight into the mind of those socialists who were followers of the social change model and believed they were able to replace the dictatorial Kádár Era with the model of democratic socialism. The author provides two examples of this model and gives us a glimpse of some less formal details from the so-called round-table discussions at that time. This interesting study deals with one of the most controversial issues of Hungarian political life these days. On the whole the author makes an attempt at informing us of different judgements regarding the political change and touches on myths and anti-myths created by both right-wing and left-wing policy. What is more, he does this by trying to be up-to-date and remain objective throughout his study.
