Abstract
During the 20th century several theories were launched on the origin of the American Spanish. These were based on the results of various investigations carried out in the field of linguistics and history. The different interpretations of linguistic data gave rise to one of the most important scientific controversies in the history of Spanish language. This article presents the most important theories that explain the features of the Spanish dialects spoken in America in terms of the place of origin of the Spanish immigrant population; moreover, it is an attempt to trace the trajectory of the question about the origin of the Spanish spoken in America(s). I believe that, in accordance with the gradual growth of knowledge concerning both Latin American dialectology and the history of the Spanish emigration towards the New World, the hypotheses have been thus refined so that radically divergent theories have been finally reconciled.
