Abstract
The Cuban constitutional reform of 1992, despite its contradictory phrasing, indicated the single-party state’s definite opening-up towards religions, including the Afro-Cuban syncretic cults. This was the first time that these cults appeared among the religions of Cuba. Getting out from the isolation caused by various decades of illegality, these cults faced an enormous tranformation. Two main directions appeared in the course of transculturation: on one hand, the process of institutionalization, supported in the background by the single-party state, gained strength; on the other hand, the demand of the religious communities for returning to the African roots has increased considerably.
