Abstract

The Hungarian Government was seeking the opportunity to avoid involvement in the German attack that had been prepared against Yugoslavia until the last moment. Finally, it yielded under Berlin’s pressure. The poorly equipped flying troops struggling with serious technical and staff deficiencies only played a supplementary role besides the German air force. They performed permanent reconnoitring activities in front of the Hungarian troops started out to take possession of Southland. They controlled the air space and protected the military corps from the air. They did not bomb inhabited places. Bombers were only applied in order to support the break-through of the Yugoslavian lines, but as the Yugoslavian armies withdrew, even this attack was terminated. In order to occupy the bridges of the Francis Channel, a parachuting operation took place, what however failed because one of the air-carriers crashed. The one-week operations have provided important lessons.
