Abstract

The patenting activity of universities has gained an increasing attention in the recent decades. Patenting can foster economic development and facilitates to acquire financial resources from commercialization; however this activity still remained at lower level at universities in Hungary. While academics play an essential role in the patenting process, only a few studies investigated the factors affecting their patenting intention. Therefore we put our research focus on the individual scientists in order to get a better understanding of the main influencing factors that can motivate or hinder academics’ patenting intention. In our study we adopted Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to investigate the importance of TPB factors and potential perceptual barriers relating to patenting intention. In the TPB model only attitude and social norms towards patenting had relationship with patenting intention while the perceived behavioral control did not. Despite of the small rate of scientists planning to patent, a high proportion of scientists are tend to patent if they got possession of patentable research results. Surprisingly, academics perceive less encouragement to patent from university management than from peers, family members and friends. Building on a qualitative study conducted in 2014 we tested potential perceptual barriers of patenting, but only the preference towards patenting against publication plays important role in the patenting intention.
