Abstract

At the northern part of the Mohács Island, the Mesozoic basement rocks reaches the alluvial sediment covered surface. A limestone cliff outcrops at the bank of the local bywater mined in the previous centuries. The research area is East from Dunaszekcső village, 5 km away from the river bank of the settlement. This basement outcrop is the highest point of the Mesozoic Nagybaracska High and of the Mohács Island as well. As a tectonic horst consisted of crystallized Middle Triassic Anisusian limestone. This limestone is good candidate for water and hydrocarbon reservoir. The water reservoir characteristics of the Middle Triassic limestone is discovered recently with a shallow water exploration well on the Northern edge of the outcrop. The limestone is well karstified, and during the compressional water tests from 3 layers the flow rate is extreme high and continuous, 1500–1800 l/min with 14.8 °C temperature, which is higher than it was expected from this depth interval. Using this value for further estimation, the water temperature can be 50 °C in 500 m depth and even 70 °C in 1000 m depth. Because of the gas content of the karstic water, it is not suitable for consumption as drinking water without cleaning and de-gasification treatments, however the waters from the deeper layers could be utilized for thermal spas, medical treatments thanks to the high mineral content and temperature. Geophysical measurements show an extended buried structure towards the Baja Subbasin. Considering the good reservoir characteristics, this structure can be good trap for hydrocarbons as well. The aim of my work is to present the newest results of the research program and the possible economical potential of this karstic limestone reservoir.
