In my study I am looking for answers for whether the convergence of the former German Democratic Republic (East-Germany before the German reunification) is a success story or not and for how the results of this convergence affected the developments of the 2017 federal elections. I am focusing especially on the rise of the party called „Alternative für Deutschland” (AFD) which is, in my view, a complex issue and cannot be attributed to a single factor. To shed light on the process of the convergence, I am going to introduce some basic economic indicators of the German economy , and a few of its particular features, with the help of German economic history. In my study, I am going to justify that the convergence- although still relying on ongoing fiscal incentives- indeed has been successful, and I am going to identify the reasons behind the birth of AFD and for its surprisingly strong election results in light of this convergence. For both of these developments, I am going to apply the theory of Ralf Dahrendorf. I am also going to discuss the forming of the new German government, and the handling of the migration crisis.
