The innovations of the information society had a huge impact on our everyday lives, and the world of work does not constitute an exception. The article will discuss the subject of whistleblowing in Hungary, with special regard to the role that online social media can play in the private sector. Whistleblowers draw public attention to perceived wrongdoings, misconduct or unethical activity within an organisation, serving the interests of the society. Although whistleblowing is regulated in Hungary, thus ensuring the protection of whistleblowers, in practice the procedure does not reach the desired effectiveness due to several factors, such as complicated administrative procedures, lack of trust in the system or fear of retaliation. The main aim of the article is to examine what role social media can play in making whistleblowing more effective. The first part of the article will overview the current whistleblowing regulation in force in Hungary, while the second part will focus on labour law and will discuss the collision of the employee’s right to freedom of expression/reporting activity and the employer’s legitimate economic interests and right to reputation. The third part will address social media and will examine how whistleblowing in social media can respond to the existing issues relating to whistleblowing in practice and what challenges are brought by it.
