Characteristics of the social milieu can have a great influence on our identity, our concept of self and our self-esteem. The frequency of comparing us to others and the people who we compare ourselves with also has a role in this relationship. This effect can be seen in such a situation, where we define ourselves as a member of a group, and another group appears – social comparison works on the intergroup and on the individual level as well. The aim of this research was to examine the effects of an imagined intergroup situation on the self-esteem, where the differences of the groups were salient. Social comparison was interpreted as a coping-mechanism to the state of threatened identity. Data of 82 volunteers (55 women and 27 men) were tested in this study. The volunteers were asked to fill the Hungarian version of the IowaHollandia Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) and the State Self-Esteem Scale twice, and they read a text about a group situation. According to the main results of this study: (1) There is a moderately strong negative correlation between the level of self-esteem and the frequency of social comparison as a strategy. (2) There is no significant difference in the state selfesteem among people, who compare themselves frequently to others, before and after reading the text about the other, praised group. Based on these experiences, we can say, that social comparison has a remarkable role in the development of self-esteem, but it is not the only factor, that is shaping our self-esteem in a group situation. It is also not the only strategy we can use to cope with the state of threatened identity. Novelty of the research is that it interprets social comparison as a long-term strategy and it emphasizes the investigation of the changes of self-esteem in a group situation. Practical benefits are related to the analysis and development of evaluation techniques in group situations (e.g. in schools, in the workplace or in sports).
