Abstract

While during the severe winter of 1783-1784 a great flood event occurred on several major rivers of Western and Central Europe in February, three flood waves of rivers, scattered both in space and time, took place in Hungary from late December to the end of March when the extraordinary long winter of 1783-1784 finally ended up. Out of the three flood-waves, only the iceflood of the Maros river (Mureş in Romanian) and the flood of some of its tributaries ended up as a really damaging flood with further consequences in late December-early January, while the less-significant flood events caused by a sudden warm interruption in February and early March caused no great harm in the country. In the present study, after providing some background information, the actual flood events of late December and early January on the basis of contemporary sources are discussed together with the possible reasons concerning the origins and development of the damaging Maros-flood.
