Abstract

The landscape forming role of anthropogenic activity is less obvious on agricultural areas than in industrial and urban regions. One should keep in mind, however, that the agricultural areas of today have once been covered by natural vegetation and neither tillage operation, nor chemical were applied there. Traditional tillage is highly mechanised. The soil is inverted by the plough or similar tools. Conservation tillage is understood as tillage practices intended to reduce soil disturbance. Conservation agriculture encompasses conservation tillage and it also seeks to preserve biodiversity. When conservation agriculture is applied chemical and physical depletion from the soil are reduced, erosion risk is minimised. The paper discusses advantages of conservation agriculture supported by research results obtained within the framework of the SOWAP (Soil and Water Protection) project, funded by EU Life and Syngenta.
