Abstract

In the region of Bodrogköz (Northeast Hungary, territory between rivers Bodrog and Tisza) a preventive excavation was conducted by Mária Wolf. At the site, traces of a Roman Age settlement, a burial dated to the second half of the 5th century and features of an Árpádian Age settlement came to light. Most of the archaeological phenomena belong to the Migration Period, 6th–9th century. In the present study, as a preliminary report, we shortly introduce the most important characteristics, parallels of the settlement and cemetery part dated to the 6th–9th century. In the excavated area, traits of subterranean and surface houses, furnaces and their working pits, pits and cremation graves were found. The find material of the settlement features mostly consists of pottery. To the two most characteristic types belong handmade, coarse, grog and pebble tempered, thick walled, undecorated Praha type pottery; handmade or slow wheeled, coarse surfaced, sand and mica, small pebbles tempered, decorated with incised bunch of wavy lines or undecorated pottery. Beside these, fragments of baking pans, baking bowls, “baking bells” and clay breads were unearthed. An object of outstanding significance is a complete baking pan. Both its material and shape is sufficiently different from clay pans and baking bowls. Stone implements were found in a relatively large number, whetstones and obsidian tools are rather frequent. Analogies of the the early, 6th–7th century material have not been known from the Bodrogköz. The settlement part from Pácin is the first site of such character. We find its nearest parallels in the material of the geographically close site of Kisvárda–TV Tower and Kisvárda–Aldi. Similarly to the early phase of the Pácin–Szenna-domb settlement, they can be classified as ones belonging to the Lazuri-Pişcolt Group. Settlement parts similar to the 8th–9th century phase of the Pácin site are known also in the Bodrogköz: Karos–Mókahomok, Karos–Tobolyka. As to the burials, most of them could be defined as unurned cremation graves, in one case an urned grave can be suggested. The closest analogy of the Pácin cemetery comes from Zemplénagárd. Materials of the settlement and cemetery introduced in the article serve important data to the Migration Period history of the Bodrogköz and its vicinity.
