Discussed in this study are the 9th-century depictions of the Carpathian Basin and of the Hungarian Plain, the heartland of the Avar Khaganate: the types of sources we can turn to and the tools and techniques available for a critical review of the evidence when constructing traditional and digital maps. The first maps of the Avar period are represented by the pages showing the hrings of the Avars and Magna Moravia in János Tomka-Szászky’s historical atlas from 1751 (Fig. 1–2); complementing these early sheets are two more recent maps reflecting a definite historical-political agenda (Fig. 3–4). The first genuine breakthrough in the collation of the late 8th-early 9th-century archaeological record with the written sources came with the preparatory work for the first volume of the series History of Hungary, published in 1984. The gazetteer of Avar sites (ADAM 2002) and the maps of the database based on this register clearly demonstrate that we need to re-think and revise our dating of this period (Fig. 5–10). István Bóna’s map from 1984 became the main source of all later maps showing conditions in Pannonia during the Carolingian period, as well as the springboard for attempts to localise the hring, the centre of the Avar Khaganate. Presented here are the hypotheses proposed by Béla Miklós Szőke and the present author (Fig. 11–17). The latest maps on conditions in the Carpathian Basin before the Hungarian Conquest attest to the arrival of the digital period in cartography too, which, incidentally, raises copyright issues that are sometimes neglected in Hungarian scholarship. Digitally drawn maps of the Carpathian Basin are illustrated with maps depicting the Moravian and Bulgarian empires (Fig. 18–21).
