Resumen: Durante la dictadura, la lengua catalana quedó marginada de la vida institucional y oficial del país y la cultura estaba sometida a un proceso inevitable de folklorización. El castellano se convirtió en la lengua de cultura de toda la población catalana bilingüe, hasta el punto de que en el caso de los usos formales la mayoría de los catalanes se sentía más competente en castellano. El resultado de la política cultural y lingüística del franquismo fue la regionalización de Cataluña y la articulación de España como estado-nación. En el período de la Transición la industria editorial barcelonesa, orientada hacia los mercados de España y América Latina, consideraba el mercado del libro en catalán demasiado pequeño o “provinciano”. Además, el potencial público lector catalán era prácticamente analfabeto en su lengua materna. A pesar de las dificultades durante los años de la autonomía, se ha consolidado un mercado del libro en catalán y la literatura catalana fue la invitada de honor de la Feria del Libro de Frankfurt en el año 2007, un éxito sin duda para una lengua sin estado. Palabras clave: lengua minoritaria, diglosia, libros en lenguas vernáculas, construcción del país, auto-afirmación cultural Abstract: The use of Catalan language was banned in the institutional and official life of Catalonia during the dictatorship, thus Catalan culture inevitably went through a process of folclorisation. The Castilian language took over the role of the language of culture for the whole of the bilingual Catalan population that continued to be Catalan-speaking, but felt itself more competent in Castilian in case of any formal use. The cultural and lingistical politics of the dictatorship resulted in the regionalisation of Catalonia and the consolidation of Spain as a nation-state. During the Transition the strong barcelonian editorial industry traditionally oriented towards the markets of Spain and Latin-America considered the Catalan edition as marginal and provincial, though it had a potential after the alfabetisation of Catalans in their mother tongue. Not without difficulties but the years of the democratical transition saw a spectacular growth of the Catalan Book and the consolidation of its market. The process reached its climax in the Frankfurt Book Fair 2007 with The Catalan Culture as Guest of Honour. An international success for a stateless language.
