Abstract
The assimilation process in Hungary speed up during the last years especially in regard of the Romanian minority. Since its traditional environment in villages started to disintegrate due to the labour force migration and to the intrusion of modern life, the figure of those adopting a dual identity increased. Beside the Romanian background, they developed also the proud conscience of being Hungarian citizens. Especially during the Ceauşescu-Dictatorship in Romania when the prestige of the mother-land declined, many Romanians from Hungary were ready to secrete their ethnic origin. During this time a generation grew up that failed to transmit their mother tongue to their children, which now regard their identity not as an inherited one but as one that can be freely chosen.
