Absztrakt (kivonat)
The idea of forming a national state, as a political entity, appeared in Finland in the beginning of 19th century, when the country became an autonomous part of the Russian Empire, after more than 600 years coexistence with Sweden. There was a split among the almost exclusively Swedish-speaking Finnish political elite, on the question of national language. The so called ‘Fennomans’ were favoring the use of Finnish language, the ‘Swedomans’ were sharply opposing this idea. In the Fennophiles’ nationalist ideology Hungary and Hungarian politicians became on one hand an example to follow, on the other hand a useful political tool promoting national propaganda. Although, the backwardness of the Hungarian feudal system was obvious for the Finnish nation-builders, and also the selection among the politicians in order to find the best ones fitting the role of being an icon was not a simple thing at all, the Finnish political press was applying Hungarian examples. During a hundred years period, in the Finnish newspapers there were illustrated such Hungarian politicians whose evaluation remained permanently unchanged: either negative or positive. The other group was formed by such politicians, whose auspices were radically switching between the opposite poles in the long run. However, these changes were not causing damages in the propaganda of nation-building; moreover they were helping the maintenance of the Finnish national consciousness in either form.
