Abstract
Hamlet is widely regarded as the most problematic play ever written, and the problem-play theory has recently undergone a remarkable modification: Hamlet is nőt only regarded as difficult or problematic, bút somé problems are claimed to be irresolvable, and the tragedy itself is believed to be inconsistent, incoherent or actually confusing. In the paper such problems of criticism are examined, particularly those conceming the Ghost. It is argued that certain problems are nőt necessarily those of the play, bút may be due to problematic and often inconsistent interpretations based on a generál modem view of Hamlet. Most modern critics, including Stephen Grenblatt, tend to identify the ambiguous Ghost simply with Hamlet’s deceased father, which appears to be the main cause of the problems of reception.
