Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MX) is one of the leading health problems in industrialised counties. MX leads to atherosclerosis, since the components of MX are diabetes, obesity, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, major risk factors of cardiovascular disease. The early development of MX in children is alarming. In the present study, we investigated whether hypothalamic lesion causes M X in humans. Moreover, we searched fór gene loci which would be convenient for the early diagnosis of MX, and their expression profile can be potentially modified by physical exercise. In agreement with recent animal experiments in the field of sport- and neurosciences, we showed that the lesion of the paraventricular, supraoptic and arcuate nuclie of the hypothalamus leads to MX. Furthermore, we found a number of gene loci, which are suspected to be suitable for the early diagnosis of MX, and for monitoring the efficacy of physical activity in the prevention of MX.
