Abstract
One of the poet Dante’s prose essays is the „Monachy” (De Monarchia), which he has probably wrote inspired by Emperor Henry V ll’s visit to Italy between 1315 and 1318. This work is considered by many to be the first instance of a thought about unified Europe, in which Dante apprehends monarchy in a universal way. The work is divided into three parts and discusses politics in connection to law and ethics. In his opinion, the aim of the monarchy is the public good, and it is the monarch’s responsibility to create the public good, since he does not depend on the Pope, but directly on God. He cites examples to prove his theses. Besides profane issues, he also recognizes the rights of the transcendent. Dante connects these problems with Christian ethics and the humanist Vision of humanity. For all the above reasons, the Florentine poet can be considered one of the important forerunners of and an organic part of European culture.
