The first thematic description of the Hungarian-Czechoslovakian population-exchange, as an event of tremendous impact on the lives of ethnic Slovaks living in Hungary, is found in Závada Pál’s novel, Milota. This paper examines the chapter The House on Market Square’, in which Závada elevates the motif of populationexchange into the text through a quasi-play. The scene where the play is set is an old peoples' home; the building was originally a family home. The actors are the old people living in the old peoples’ home, who were all involved in the population exchange after World War II. The actors volunteered to act their younger selves from a couple of decades ago. The theatrical play has two readings; besides the literal reading, the population exchange can also be read as a theatrical play, where the true objectives of the population exchange were masked.
