Abstract
By the 20th century, it had become obvious that the modern metropolis functions not only as a space for living, but also as an approach to the world, as the space of a new world view. A clear and unambiguous cityscape without cultural references or other narratives promotes a value-neutral and unambiguous interpretation of the world. However, the power relations expressed in the structuring of space always involve forms of monopolisation of memory and self-representation. This paper examines the appearance of these forms in the antiUtopian literature of the first half of the century, and outside the realm of fiction, in the practice of totalitarian Systems.
