Abstract
A microbiological, soil biotechnological method (seed inoculation with selected Pseudomonas fluorescens strains) was tested for the rhizosphere treatment of maize, which plays an important role in forage crop production. Although this method cannot be widely used in agricultural practice, it can be applied in maize breeding. То make it suitable for use in field crop production, efficient methods of seed inoculation will be needed. The efficiency of the yield and grain moisture content exhibited an improvement compared with the untreated control, as the yield of plants grown under aseptic conditions had significantly higher dry matter. Although not all the treatments gave a significant difference from the control, the decrease in grain moisture content could result in a substantial reduction in crop drying costs. Seed inoculation with selected PGPR strains means not only an increase in crop yield per unit area, but also an improvement in yield stability due to better plant fitness. Its use on a large scale would lead to a decrease in the specific variable costs, and thus a considerably income from seed sales.
