Abstract
The study contains the analysis of the foundation legend of Rome, the story of Romulus and Remus, from three different aspects. The first is an aproach using mythological-philosophical ideas, the second aspect is that of the comparative mythology, while the third method is connected with the research of texts of historical tradition from a legal view-point. The foundation story can be considered a perfect cosmogony from the first aspect, a heroic (heros) story from the second view-point, and an ironic collection of Roman criminal law from the third standpoint. The author draws the conslusion that the basis of the story of Romulus and Remus was an ancient legend, which was later joined by a classical Greek parable coloured by the theatrical Hellenistic style. The endangered Hellenistic world formed this story for discrediting his Roman rival. So Roman historians were compelled to constantly comment upon their past from a defensive standpoint. However, they succeded to mix the cosmogonical stories and heroic myths into a narrative that suited all requirements and tried to verify not only the divine descent, but a prophecy as well, i. e. that the city of Rome was destined to rule over the people of the Earth.
