Abstract
The United States has been struggling with a global image problem lately, mainly on account of its handling international conflicts. While, on the one hand, the U.S. advocates the spreading of democratic values and is the chief engine of economic development in the world, its role as a superpower has been exposed to criticism often accusing it of unilateralism and „imperial overreach." While waging a war on global terrorism with military means, eventually, the administration of G. W. Bush has been compelled to adopt elements of „soft power” as well as public diplomacy in its foreign policy in order to improve its prestige and image in the world. This essay examines some of the root causes for a changing American image overseas with an overview of how the U.S. has been seen and judged internationally, as reflected in the media.
