Durante la vita di Dante, quattordici papi sedevano sul trono di san Pietro. Con una sola eccezione (Giovanni XXI), lui aveva un parere molto negativo quasi su ciascuno di essi. Pietro Ispano era l’unico lodato, ma non per la sua attività di papa, ma per la sua opera filosofica, Summulae logicales. La maggior parte degli altri soffrono nell’Inferno o nel Purgatorio (oppure non vengono neanche nominati). Nel seicentesimo anniversario della morte di Dante, in un’enciclica, il papa Benedetto XV ha elogiato il capolavoro del poeta ispirato da Dio ed implicitamente ha cancellato i gravi errori dei suoi predecessori contro Dante.In Dante’s life, fourteen Popes sat on St. Peter’s throne. With the only exception of John XXIst, he despised them all. He appreciated Petrus Hispanus only for his philosophy of language, not for his papacy. The majority of the Popes suffer in Hell or in Purgatory. In the 600th anniversary of Dante’s death, Pope Benedict XVth in his encyclical, praised the work of the poet as inspired by the Holy Spirit, and implicitly withdrew his predecessors’ erroneous judgements against Dante.
