Abstract
Liszt regarded the Dante Symphony as one of his most important program music works. He meant it to be, as he put it, a kind of admittedly subjective, individual commentary to his Divina Commedia. For the sake of promoting the reception of his music he asked his fellow musician Richard Pohl to write an introduction to the symphony in 1857. While Pohl’s writing was intended first of all for the wider public, the 1860 analysis by another of Liszt’s colleagues, Felix Draeseke, aimed at reaching musicians. These two analyses have formed the basis of all the program explanations published ever since. Nevertheless, the reception of the symphony was all but favourable and appropriate: despite Liszt’s efforts, the audience failed to recognize the close connection between Dante’s poem and the music. It was partly due to the distrust of program music, in particular to the doubt worded most aptly by Eduard Hanslick whether music was capable of expressing extra-musical messages at all. On the other hand, the hermeneutically conceived explanations by Pohl and Draeseke were not profound enough to convince their readers. It is beyond question that unraveling the meaning of instrumental music poses a difficult task for all of analysts. Nonetheless, Liszt’s assertion that through the closer union of music with poetry he succeeded in creating a new, speech-like instrumental style incites us to get to the root of his statement. In my study I try to explain by means of the musical connections of the symphony how the work is linked to Dante’s poem.
