It is a cliché of history that Hungary, in the wake of WWI and the Treaty of Trianon, could depend on Germany only in her pursuit of territorial revision. Thus the road had already been paved for the Hungarians to side with Germany, initially as an ally and later as a satellite state, in the tragic events of WWII. Far fewer people are aware, however, that Hungarian hopes rested on an utter illusion, even though the historical literature makes it evident. With respect to the German attitude on territorial revision, which was the main priority of Hungarian political leadership, the Nazi Era has been the most comprehensively documented, although numerous works have also been produced on the preceding historical period, Weimar-Era Germany. This short one-and-a-half-decadeslong era was not characterized by a unanimous viewpoint as related to Hungarian territorial revision, however. The Weimar Era can be divided into three distinct periods: the initial uncertain period (1918–23) with its difficult-to-profile years; the medial period (1923–29) when Gustav Stresemann, who rejected Hungarian revisionist aspirations, served as Minister of Foreign Affairs; and the late Weimar Era (1930–33), which evinced a tactical change of perspective towards Hungary. Our work focuses on the contradictory relations of the most interesting and least well-known initial period.
