The topic of the work is the jewellery found in the 9th century cemetery Nitra-Lupka, especially emphasis on earrings with lower arch ornaments with roundwound wire. Through these artefacts the paper touches the historical discussion on the geographical positioning of the Moravian state. The examined jewellery had been the foundation of numerous archaeological-historical interpretations, therefore its analysis is interesting in itself. It can be proved that these objects are not sufficient to prove the migration of certain ethnic groups/tribes. Nevertheless these artefacts well signify the influence of the local population. In addition, the Carolingian border culture, as well as the Slavic core territory had its effect on this fashion. The cemetery of Nitra-Lupka tells us not only about the continuous habitation of the territory but also about the Hungarian tribes arrived to the region. Similar objects from the cemetery of the Transdanubian Halimba village show that these findings could not only be connected with the Northern (formerly Moravian) territory but also with the Southern (Byzantine) regions. In these latter territories this type of earring was continously in fashion throughout the 10th century. As mentioned, this paper also deals with the positioning of the Moravian state. It summarizes the main discussion points and supports the traditional opinion that accepted a Northern localization of the state. The article calls the attention of Hungarian research to the misunderstanding background of the historical opinion supporting a Southern position. These arguments were extensively analyzed by Srdan Pirivatric in his 1997 study. He directed researchers' attention to the fact that data from historical sources can be connected with the Morava thema which had been an administration territory of the Byzantine Empire.
