Among the charters issued between 1326 and 1344 in 528 ones can be found data on mills, mill places or millers. During these two decades significant development can be seen by the help of these diplomas. Firstly, in the middle of the 14th century the waterwheel moved by the water of the river became the power engine not only of graining, but also of mining and ore processing. Secondly, in the Hungarian Great Plane on those rivers with smaller falls and large fluctuation of water level where the river mills were not able to work, the adoption of water energy by some kinds of boatmills began. The environmental changes in connection with mills, dams and artifical channels often caused the diversion of brooks and smaller rivers, and made them flow to new directions. According to the territorial and chronological distribution of charters, until the end of the age of the Árpáds (1301) the spreading of watermills in county Bars can be seen only in the southern parts inhabited by Hungarians, in the northern parts dwelled by Slavs the industrial using of water energy can be recognized only decades after 1301. This development was caused by the more intensive presence of the Hungarians and foreign dwellers, organized from the central territories of Hungary.
