Abstract
The author of the present study examines the territorial authority of the palatine (Latin: comes palatínus, Hungarian: nádorispán) between 1205 and 1248. The palatine was the highest secular judge after the king in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. The author sets out from the example of Roland. Roland was palatine and comes (Hungarian: ispán , 'local lord', i.e. royal governor) of Pozsony county (Hungarian: megye) between 1248 and 1260. His activity mainly focused on the north-western area of the realm, where he held the office of comes comitatus Posoniensis. There is no documentary evidence, however, informing us that prior to 1248 the office of the palatine concentrated only on a particular region, or the territorial respect of the palatinal measures was connected with the office of the comes comitatus, that the palatine held. The established borders of the palatinal jurisdiction emerged already in the first half of the thirteenth century. Nevertheless, Transylvania and the parts lying beyond the river Dráva formed separate entities. Although some measures can be associated with the parts lying beyond the river Dráva, one of them appears in a false charter, while in the other case the palatine took measures as comes of this area. Only one case can be identified as a real palatinal measure, but from the statistical point of view it is insignificant.
