Dubrovnik in 1358 became part of the Hungarian Kingdom as a consequence of peace treaty with Zadar, in this manner the Hungarian diplomacy played its role in the war between Dubrovnik and Kotor (1361—1362). Not only these Dalmatian towns, but also the whole Western Balkan region participated in this conflict: Vojislav Vojinovic, the baron of the Serbian king, the allies of Dubrovnik such as the family of Balsic, or the Adriatic town of Budva, while Venice wanted to protect her local commercial interests. Louis I, King of Hungary was interested in the activity of his former Serbian and Venetian enemies, but mainly the Dalmatian banus directed the Hungarian diplomacy, so mostly Dalmatian ambassadors (usually from Zadar) arrived at Dubrovnik with news and instructions to help the town's government. During the Hungarian supremacy Dubrovnik possessed of a great level of independence.
