Abstract

By the time of the battle of Kosovo in 1389, the route was open (beyond the Serbian territory) for the Ottomans towards the Hungarian Kingdom. The results of our analysis of the sources have indicated that that Belgrade was very likely besieged by the Ottomans at the beginning of the reign of sultan Bayezid I (1389-1402). The examination of this question can reveal a new side of the foreign policy of king Sigismund towards the Ottomans which has not been researched yet in Hungarian historiography. The Tarihi of Oruç Beg mentions only the Ottoman attempt of this siege. Although the lack of information in the Hungarian sources might confirm this event, the enforced 'partnership' of Stefan Lazarevic and Bayezid I enabled to extend the Ottoman borders and preserve the Serbian ones with the Hungarian Kingdom. For the Hungarians, the real political threat was that the Ottoman vassal, despot Lazarevic would regain Belgrade from the Hungarians. This study examines these questions by analysing Byzantine and Ottoman sources.
