Abstract

The Anemas conspiracy was one of the most serious political crises in the reign of Alexios I Komnenos (1081—1118). Anna Komnene gives a long account on the affair in her historical work, the Alexiad, and John Zonaras also mentions the event in a considerably shorter narrative. However, some aspects of the conspiracy raise several problems. From the last decade of the eleventh century, more and more affairs, such as the Diogenes conspiracy or the rebellion of Gregory Taronites, indicate the growing tensions within the wider imperial kin, and even inside the imperial family. Although the key figures of the Anemas conspiracy held important positions both in the military and the civil administration, none of them had kinship to the emperor and his family. The historical accounts state that the conspirators planned to gain the throne for one of them. However, the concurrent political system, the extended family government, prevented anyone out of the imperial kin to become the head of the empire. This characteristic contradicted the goals of the plotters recorded by the historians, but it also raises the question whether the conspiracy was related to more powerful individuals. The narrative of Anna Komnene implies connections between the Doukas family, one of the most important families of the period, and the plotters. This study seeks to reveal these ties and the possible role of the Doukai in the affair.
