The present study analyses the life and career of a medieval lawyer in Hungary who lived at the turn of the 14th Century. Peter cantor was a member of the cathedral chapter of Veszprém from 1287 to 1316/17. During his tenure in office he represented his bishop or his chapter in numerous cases as a lawyer. In the source material of the so-called tithe dispute of Sasad between the bishops of Veszprém and the abbots of Cistercian monastery of Bélakút we can come across a petition from 1297 created by Peter cantor. In this petition Peter attacked the legal procee-dings of the ecclesiastical court headed by the Archbishop of Esztergom and supported his argument with 57 various regulations from the Roman and Canon law. Based on these passages it can be concluded that the legal expertise of Peter was based on works like the Decretum Gratiani, the Liber Extra and different parts of the Corpus Iuris Canonici. Comparing the list of legal collections used by Peter with the known private libraries of other contemporary canonists from Hungary it can be assumed that the legal qualification of Peter was equal to them. As there are no traces of Peter ever studied in Italian universities or in Paris, it cannot be ruled out that he studied law at the cathedral school of Veszprém. If this hypothesis was true, the petition of Peter would clearly show that the rich material of the library of the institution, which was burned down in 1276, was at least pardy replaced by the 1290s. Furthermore, the active use of Roman law by Peter could also support the idea that that Roman law was also taught in the school of Veszprém.
