As compared to the first Princes' Crusade (1096-1099) the Crusade of 1101 gets less attention. This slight ignorance could be understandable if we take only the final results of the two campaigns into the consideration. The Princes' Crusade broke through the Anatolian and the Syrian territories to reach out and conquer Jerusalem. The Crusade of 1101 (also known as the second Princes' Crusade) had collapsed in the Anatolian plateau as a result of the heavy Seljuk-Turkish resistance. The goal of this paper is to present this military disaster through the eyes of the historians who tried to find answers for this surprising defeat streak only 2 years after the amazing and marvellous victory at Jerusalem. How did come that Western European knight armies lost against the same Seljuk forces that were badly defeated by the first Princes' Crusade? Unfortunately, there are just a few historians who carried on more than a basic research concerning the Crusade of 1101 and there are even fewer who tried to find an appropriate explanation for this military catastrophe. Historians like Jonathan Riley-Smith, James L. Cate, Steven Runciman or Alec Mulinder have found out several answers to this interesting question. In this paper, I will try to present these theories regarding the background of this very expensive crusading failure.
