Abstract
Leprosy existed in the territory of Hungary from earliest times. Research on the subject cannot be considered as closed as there are still blank spots on the map and unknown archaeological periods. All further results could significantly modify current epidemiological knowledge on the spread of leprosy in time and space. The earliest written Hungarian records on the subject date from the 11th cen-tury. However, the disease can be identified in bones excavated from cemeter-ies dating from the period of the great migrations. Leprosy also appears in the legends and portrayals of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Saint Margaret of Hungary. Leprosy still occurs practically throughout the world, although there has been a slight decline in the number of registered patients. India, Brazil, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Myanmar (Burma) are among the most infected countries.
