Abstract
The topic of this essay is the study of the dirges and lamentations which are performed during funerals in the Russian countryside. The death of a human being is always a social event, in these songs we can see how human relationships rule our society, and it’s degree of religiousness, which Georgij Fedotov calls the theological intuition of the people. These lamentations – as the part of the ancient ritual poetry – are using an-tique mythological symbols. The songs I study in my essay were recorded and published ten to twenty years ago in Russian villages and I am particularly inter-ested in the ways of their representation of lyrical narration.
