Abstract
The Hungarian folk tradition ascribes special importance to midwives regarding the initial rites of child birth. They assistence by the ceremony of baptism was necessary to fulfill their role as midwife in the Catholic mothers’ point of view. In Csongrád (Hungary) at the beginning of the 19th century, the religion of the midwife was a pointless question. Catholic women accepted the ceremonial assistance of the Jewish and Catholic midwives as the same. In 1841, when the new Catholic priest, József Jancsovics arrived to the town, he found this situation incomprehensible; so he banned to the Jewish midwife, Rozália Böhm, to enter the threshold of the Catholic church. Rozália Böhm tried to find her right on every way she could. First she turned with her com-plains to the Bishop of the Diocese of Vác, then to profane legislations. In my essay I intend to analyse the further meaning of ceremonial assistance of Jewish midwifes in Csongrád at the beginning of the 19th century.
