Abstract
As a last demonstration of its power, the Monarchy undertook to publish folk songs. Bartók and Kodály were commissioned in 1916 by the Austrian Ministry of Defence to compile a pocket-size collection under the title One Hundred Hungarian Soldiers’ Songs for the soldiers to use in community singing. Bartók and Kodály visited many barracks in the hinterland collecting soldiers’ songs. The paper clarifies the peculiar contradictions between the considerations of the commissioning institution and that of the editors. It is mentioned that the collection carries important realizations concerning the characteristics of the Hungarian musical identity as the war itself, too, contributed considerably to the beginning of a new musical era, the propagation of the Hungarian new style. Kodály also pointed out the transnational dimension of the propagation of Hungarian soldiers’ songs. The paper summarizes the results of the author’s 2010 book, One Hundred Hungarian Soldiers’ Songs, published in Hungarian and German.
