Abstract
The paper examines the transformations of the symbolic relationship between the Hungarian political Catholicism and the Habsburg dynasty in the mirror of the Catholic Assemblies. This relationship was often complicated by tensions: in the 1850’-s, Franz Joseph attempted to restrict the independence of the Hungarian hierarchy, and inthe 1890’-s he sanctioned the liberal reform laws on ecclesiastical matters. Despite the tensions, the expression of the solidarity with the person of the King (and not with his actual policy) became a permanent programme point on the National Catholic Assemblies, and the members of the dynasty occasionally took part on the Assemblies. The rites of the dynastic loyalty worked on a regular basis and proved to be long-lasting, as they proceeded even after the dethronement of the Habsburgs in 1921.
