Abstract
The picture postcards, which gained ground in the end of the 19thcentury, was not only a popular tool with the soldiers for keeping in contact with their families in the First World War but mass communication and war propaganda also made use of them.The picture postcards depicting Franz Joseph and the leaders of the Central Powers symbolized the attentive emperor and the union of the Powers. Picture postcards with charging soldiers suggested the heroism of soldiers victorious over the enemy. Caricatures and zoomorphic portrayals helped in forming a negative picture and hatred towards the enemies. Picture postcards depicting religious and romantic scenes along with those which showed men-at-arms enjoying themselves in the trenches served as consolation for the families of soldiers.
