Abstract
The building of railways in the second half of the 19th century and at the turn of the 19th-20th century allowed the participation for the ordinary people in far dis-tance pilgrimages. Fort he Hungarians the most popular destinations of far dis-tance pilgrimages were Mariazell (Austria), Rome (Italy) and Lourdes (France). The travels were organized initially by priests, parish offices, dioceses, but soon by (international) travel agencies. The remembrance of these pilgrimages were eternalized by books, which are analysed in this article. The publications report in datail ont he route, the circumstances on the train, the way stations under way and the stay in the places of pilgrimages. Until now these written sources wer negliged in investigation of pilgrimages.
