Abstract

The idea to search after the genre of „bluffing” („nagyotmondás” in Hungarian) was inspired by the Háry János memorial event and writing of András Berecz. The main reason I like the above mentioned genre is that it carries multi-layer/complex messages. „Those, whose senses for the stories like that aren’t fully developped, and whose heart is not yet filled with love are incapable of understanding the story, all they know is that some is lying (bluffing)” said András Berecz. The first „aptitude test” is about to see trough the bluffing, as it has a deeper message. The returned broken soldiers of the lost war decided to take a deep breath and lighten the mood. The majority of bluffings were about the size of the things they witnessed (for example: huge vegetables, towers, bells) and how strange things happened to them during their way, especially in Russia. For instance there was a story about a former soldier who explained the reason of his ugliness. He claimed that after a serious injury from a cannon during the war, he lost his head, and since he had 67no time to pick and choose, hegrabbed the first head he found and wrapped it around his neck instead of his own. Returning with such strange and unrespectful stories like these –what were based on real battles and struggles, with real heads falling –was the right of only those, who have indeed lived and fought trought the events of the war. Through these stories we can easily understand the historical thinking and the pursuit of hope of our nation. My ethnographical research began in 2001 and lasted two years in the Hungarian language area, which included about 25 researcher location.
