Abstract
The exit of Italy from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (1915) created the most strange theater of the First World War. The inhabitants of the multiethnic big cities of Julian Alps (Trieste, Gorizia) have produced a special culture in the last two-three decades: in the linguistics (Graziadio Isaia Ascoli) and literature (Italo Svevo, Carlo Michelstaedter, Scipio Slataper). Besides their Jewish origin, Italian patriotism and irredentism were their common features. The war caused strange destinies: often members of the same family fought on both sides of the front, father agaist son. Those who were forced to remain faithful, fought in the army of the Monarchy, others, deserted and converted into the Italian army. Giani Stuparich's novel illustrates this absurd situation through the tragic history of a family (Ritorneranno).
