Abstract

Kecskés István telep is located in the Southern part ofSzeged, on both sides of Szabadkai road. The creation of this district of the town, which provides home for 3000 people today, is connected to the World War I. After the war building sites were granted to disabled soldiers, war widows and war orphans, in accordance with the§61 of the law XXXVI/1920. In Szeged the allotment of building sites started in 1924. With the help of István Kecskés, a disabled captain, 381 building sites and 337 hectares of city-owned land was distributed altogether. Out of these, 171 building sites were allotted between 1924 and 1934 in the area that is known as Kecskés István telep today and 160 houses were built before the World War II. In my study I describe the help these unfortunate people received to build their houses, the development of infrastructure (pavement, drinking water, electricity) as well as the development of the social life within the community.
